Grass Grid Specification and Load-Bearing Performance Standards

Grass grid (also called grass paver or grass paving grid) is a cellular plastic grid used to reinforce grass areas that also have to carry loads — parking lots, fire lanes, slopes and lawns. Choosing the right grass grid specification is important because the grid must both protect the grass and support the vehicle or pedestrian load. This article explains the main specifications and performance standards you need to check when you select a grass grid for your project.

1. What Is a Grass Grid?

A grass grid is a set of interconnected plastic cells, usually made of recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP). The cells are filled with topsoil and grass seed, so the finished surface is a load-bearing green lawn. The grid takes the compressive load from wheels and feet while the soil and roots stay protected inside the cells. Common applications are ecological parking lots, garden driveways, slope greening and fire access roads.

2. Key Specification Items

  • Cell dimensions: typical cell sizes are 40–60 mm across, with wall thickness around 3–6 mm. Larger cells hold more soil and give a thicker grass cover.
  • Panel height: usually 40 mm or 50 mm. The height decides how much soil the grass roots can use and how much load the grid carries.
  • Panel size: common modules are about 390–600 mm per side, connected by clip or hook joints.
  • Load capacity: check the compressive strength, commonly stated in kN/m² or t/m². For car parking 40–60 t/m² is typical; for occasional trucks you need a heavier grid.
  • Material: HDPE grids are tough and weather resistant; PP grids are lighter. Recycled material is common and cost-effective.

3. Performance Standards

There is no single international standard that covers all grass grids, so buyers should ask the supplier for a test report of compressive strength, UV resistance and low-temperature brittleness. In China, geosynthetic products are generally referenced against the GB/T series standards; a reliable supplier can provide a third-party test certificate for the actual product. Ask for the test method and the measured value, not just a marketing number.

4. Choosing the Right Grid for Your Use

  • Car parking / driveway: 50 mm high grid with a compressive strength of at least 40 t/m², laid on a compacted base and filled with sandy loam and grass seed.
  • Slope protection: a grid with deeper cells and good interlock, fixed with anchor pins to prevent sliding on slopes.
  • Garden / pedestrian: a lighter 40 mm grid is usually enough.

5. Ordering and Checking

When you order, confirm the panel size, height, cell size, compressive strength and the color (green, black or custom).
