Geomembrane Tensile Strength Testing: What Buyers Should Know

Tensile strength is one of the most important mechanical properties of geomembrane. Understanding how it is tested helps buyers evaluate product quality and specify the right material for their project.

What is Tensile Strength?

Tensile strength measures the maximum stress a material can withstand while being stretched before breaking. For geomembranes, it indicates how well the liner can resist tearing and stretching under installation stresses, earth loads, and differential settlement.

Testing Standards

The most common test methods follow international standards:

  • ASTM D882: Standard test method for tensile properties of thin plastic sheeting
  • ISO 527-3: Plastics - Determination of tensile properties
  • GB/T 17643: Chinese standard for geosynthetic waterproofing membranes

Key Test Results to Review

When reviewing test reports, pay attention to:

  • Yield strength: Stress at which the material begins to deform permanently
  • Break strength: Maximum stress before fracture
  • Elongation at break: How much the material stretches before breaking (typically 500-900% for HDPE)
  • Tear resistance: Resistance to crack propagation after a tear starts

Typical HDPE Geomembrane Values

For 1.5mm smooth HDPE geomembrane, typical tensile strength values are:

  • Yield strength: 15-20 N/mm (machine direction)
  • Break strength: 25-35 N/mm
  • Elongation at break: >600%
