Grass Grid Materials Overview: Types, Specifications and Applications

If you are planning a green parking lot, driveway or slope, you will need more than just the plastic panels. This grass grid materials overview lists the complete package — the grid types, the base materials and the accessories — so you can order everything in one go and avoid delays on site. The right combination of grass paver, base layer and fill is what makes the finished surface strong and green.

assorted grass grid panel types and specifications

1. Grass Grid Types

  • Standard honeycomb grid (40–50 mm): the most common type for car parking, driveways and general lawns. Balanced between cost, load capacity and grass growth.
  • Heavy-duty grid (60–80 mm): deeper cells and thicker walls for fire lanes, occasional truck access and slopes where more soil depth is needed.
  • Porous / drainage grid: with open cells for rainwater infiltration, used in ecological parking and sponge-city projects.

For a detailed comparison and selection advice, see our grass grid & grass paver guide.

2. Base Materials

Under the grid you need clean aggregate (gravel or crushed stone) compacted in layers, a geotextile separator on soft subgrade, and edge restraints where the surface meets walls or paths. The base carries the real load — the grass grid spreads it and protects the grass. If the base is wrong, no grid will save the project.

3. Fill and Seeding Materials

Fill the cells with sandy loam or a topsoil/sand mix, and choose a grass seed suitable for your climate — drought-tolerant species for hot areas, wear-tolerant mixes for parking lots. A light starter fertilizer helps the grass establish in the first weeks.

4. Accessories

Order clip connectors (usually included but buy spares), anchor pins for slopes and edges, and edge restraints if required. A few spare panels are useful for later repairs. For the full method, read our grass grid installation guide.

5. Order the Complete Package

The easiest way to keep the project on schedule is to order the full grass grid package — panels, geotextile, anchor pins and advice — from one supplier. We provide factory-direct grass grid panels with specification data and installation guidance for projects worldwide. See our supply case for how a complete package was delivered on a real parking project.
