Grass Grid Quality Inspection and Testing Items You Should Know

A grass grid works under cars and trucks for years, so the quality of the product matters. Before you accept a batch, and during a project, you should check a few key items: dimensions, compressive strength, material quality and joint performance. This article lists the main grass grid quality inspection and testing items that separate a durable grid from one that cracks or deforms in the first season.

1. Visual and Dimensional Inspection

Check that every panel has uniform cells, clean edges and no cracks, flash or foreign matter. Measure the panel dimensions, cell size and wall thickness with a caliper against the supplier’s data sheet. A well-made grass grid has a tolerance of only a few millimeters on panel size, and the clips on all four sides engage smoothly with the next panel.

2. Compressive Strength Test

The key performance number is the compressive (bearing) strength, usually reported in t/m² or kN/m². The test places a plate on the grid and loads it until a set deformation, following the standard test method. Check that the measured value matches the grade you ordered — for example 40 t/m² for car parking. Ask for the test certificate from a third-party lab if the project is important.

3. Material Quality Checks

Verify the material is the agreed HDPE or PP grade. A quick check is the weight per panel and the feel of the material — a grid made with too much filler is brittle and light. Look for the UV stabilizer indication if the grid will sit in strong sunlight for years, and confirm low-temperature impact resistance for cold climates so the grid does not become brittle in winter.

4. Joint and Clip Performance

Lay two panels together and check that the clips lock firmly, that the panels sit flush with no rocking, and that a single panel can be lifted without the neighbor following. Weak joints are a common failure point — if the clips break or slip, the surface opens up under traffic. Also check that spare clips are available for repairs.

5. On-Site Acceptance

When the batch arrives, sample at least 2–3 panels from different pallets and repeat the dimensional and visual checks. Keep one sample as a reference for comparison with future orders. Record the results so you can compare suppliers. For the full specification items to request, see our grass grid specification guide, and for the laying method our installation guide.

6. Need Tested Grass Grid?

We supply grass grid panels with clear specification data and can provide test documentation for project tenders. Contact us with your required load and area and we will recommend the right grade.
