How to Choose HDPE Geomembrane Thickness for Different Projects

Selecting the right geomembrane thickness is a critical decision that affects both project performance and cost. This guide helps you choose the appropriate HDPE liner thickness based on project type, subgrade conditions, and design requirements.

Common Thickness Options and Applications

Thickness Typical Applications
0.5mm-0.75mm Agricultural ponds, ornamental water features, lightweight covers
1.0mm-1.5mm Landfill base liners, reservoir linings, wastewater ponds
2.0mm-3.0mm Municipal solid waste landfill, mining leachate pads, exposed slopes

Factors That Influence Thickness Selection

Subgrade condition: Rocky or angular subgrades require thicker liner (1.5mm+) to resist puncture. Soft, smooth soil allows thinner options (0.75mm-1.0mm).

Exposure conditions: Exposed slopes and areas subject to foot traffic or equipment movement need thicker material. Buried liners can use standard thickness.

Chemical compatibility: Contact with aggressive chemicals may require thicker HDPE with enhanced UV resistance.

Recommended Thickness by Project Type

  • Landfill bottom liner: 1.5mm-2.0mm HDPE
  • Landfill slope cover: 1.5mm-2.0mm HDPE (thicker for steep slopes)
  • Water reservoir: 1.0mm-1.5mm HDPE
  • Fish/shrimp pond: 0.5mm-0.75mm HDPE or LLDPE
  • Tunneling and underground: 1.0mm-1.5mm with protection layer

Choosing the right thickness balances performance requirements with budget. Our technical team can help you select the optimal geomembrane specification for your specific project.
