Geomembrane Installation: Subgrade Preparation and Panel Laying

Correct installation is the key factor that determines whether an HDPE geomembrane liner performs as designed. This article summarizes the essential steps for subgrade preparation and panel laying on typical containment projects such as ponds, lagoons and landfill cells.

Subgrade Preparation

The subgrade must be smooth, firm and free of sharp objects. Remove stones, roots and debris, and compact the surface to avoid differential settlement. A geotextile cushion layer is recommended on rough or rocky ground to protect the membrane from punctures.

Panel Layout Planning

Plan the panel layout to minimize seams and position them away from high-stress areas. Panels are usually laid parallel to the slope direction on side slopes, with the slope length matched to the panel width to reduce field welding work.

Unrolling and Positioning

Unroll the geomembrane panels and allow them to relax on the subgrade before welding. Avoid dragging the membrane over sharp edges. Weight down the panels with sandbags to prevent wind uplift during installation.

Seaming and Quality Control

Field seams are made by hot wedge welding for HDPE welding rod reinforcement or by fusion welding for lap joints. Each seam should be tested according to the project specification, normally by air pressure testing or vacuum box testing. Record the results for acceptance.

Final Inspection

Before backfilling, inspect the whole liner for scratches, punctures or open seams. Repair any defect with a patch of the same material and re-test the repaired area. For detailed welding parameters, refer to our geomembrane welding guide.
