Grass Grid Installation: A Step-by-Step Guide for Parking Lots and Slopes

Grass grid pavers, also known as plastic grass reinforcement grids, are widely used to stabilize parking lots, driveways, fire lanes and slope protection areas. A proper installation directly affects the load capacity, drainage performance and service life of the system. This guide explains the key steps for installing plastic grass grid pavers on typical projects.

Step 1: Prepare the Subgrade

Excavate the area to the required depth. For pedestrian areas a 150-200 mm base is usually sufficient, while parking areas normally require 250-300 mm. Compact the subgrade evenly and remove roots, stones or soft spots so the surface stays flat and firm.

Step 2: Lay and Compact the Base Aggregate

Spread crushed stone or gravel in layers and compact each layer. The base layer provides the load-bearing capacity of the whole system. An uneven base will cause the grass grid panels to rock and reduce the interlocking strength between cells.

Step 3: Install the Grass Grid Panels

Start from a fixed edge and place the panels side by side. Push the interlocking clips together until the cells align. Most plastic grass grid panels measure 500 x 500 mm or 600 x 600 mm, with a cell depth of 40-50 mm for standard applications and 80-100 mm for heavy-duty parking areas.

Step 4: Fill with Soil or Gravel

Fill the cells with topsoil for grassed areas, or with pea gravel for a low-maintenance finish. Sweep the surface to ensure the filler settles into every cell before the final compaction.

Step 5: Seed or Install Turf

For grassed areas, sow grass seed or lay turf after filling. Keep the surface moist during the first two to three weeks so the roots can establish through the grid. For gravel-filled grids, simply compact and level the final surface.
