Geomembrane Anchoring: Anchor Trench Design and Installation

Anchoring is a critical part of HDPE geomembrane liner installation. Without a proper anchor, the liner edge can pull loose under water pressure, wind or temperature changes. This article explains the anchor trench method and its installation steps.

Why Anchoring Is Needed

The edges of a pond or reservoir liner must be fixed so the membrane stays in position when the water level changes. The anchor trench holds the liner edge firmly and seals the transition between the liner and the surrounding ground.

Anchor Trench Design

A typical anchor trench is about 300-500 mm wide and 300-500 mm deep, cut around the perimeter of the liner. The trench size depends on the soil type and the expected pull on the liner. On soft ground, a wider and deeper trench gives a stronger hold.

Installation Steps

Excavate the trench around the perimeter and trim the liner edge so it extends into the trench with enough length. Fold the liner edge into the trench, place it flat, and backfill with compacted soil or concrete. The backfill should cover the liner completely to lock it in place.

Alternative Anchoring Methods

Where a trench is not possible, the liner edge can be fixed with a concrete curb or a ballasted pipe. The method is chosen according to the structure type and the site condition. In all cases, the anchor must be continuous around the perimeter without gaps.

Final Check
