Geomembrane Weld Seam Testing Methods: Vacuum Box and Air Lance

Testing geomembrane weld seams is essential to ensure the integrity of the waterproofing system. Proper seam testing identifies leaks and defects before the liner is covered, preventing costly future repairs.

Vacuum Box Testing

Vacuum box testing is a non-destructive method for inspecting extrusion welds and repair patches:

  • Apply a soap solution to the weld seam surface
  • Place the transparent vacuum box over the seam and create a vacuum
  • Watch for bubbles forming, which indicate leaks
  • Mark any defects and repair immediately after testing
  • Suitable for flat surfaces and accessible seams

Air Channel Pressure Testing

For hot wedge double-track welds, the air channel between the two weld lines provides built-in testing capability:

  • Seal both ends of the air channel
  • Inject air into the channel at 0.15-0.20 MPa
  • Monitor pressure for 5 minutes; pressure drop should not exceed 10%
  • This method tests the entire length of the double-track seam efficiently

Visual Inspection and Shear Testing

In addition to leak testing:

  • Visual inspection: Check for uniform weld bead, no gaps, consistent width
  • Shear testing: Use a shear tester to measure weld strength; should exceed liner material strength
  • Peel testing: Test samples periodically to verify weld parameters

All test records should be documented for project acceptance. Our geomembrane products meet national and international standards. Contact us for technical specifications.
