Two Test Methods
Geotextiles are commonly tested by grab tensile strength (ASTM D4632) and wide-width tensile strength (ASTM D4595). The grab test uses a 100mm wide specimen and is quick; the wide-width test uses a 200mm wide specimen that better represents the fabric's true stress distribution.
Which to Specify
For non-woven geotextile used as separation or cushion, grab strength is usually sufficient. For reinforcement applications, wide-width strength provides a more realistic design value.
Typical Values
Non-woven separation fabrics typically show grab strength of 500-1500 N. Higher-strength woven geotextiles for reinforcement exceed 10kN wide-width.
