Geomembrane Tensile Testing: What Specifiers Should Check

Geomembrane quality verification relies on standardized tensile tests. Specifiers and project engineers should understand what each test result indicates.

Key Tensile Tests

  • Tensile strength at yield: Measures the maximum force the material withstands before deformation
  • Tensile strength at break: Force at which the specimen fractures completely
  • Elongation at break: Percentage stretch before failure, indicating flexibility
  • Tear resistance: Measures resistance to tear propagation from a notch

Test Standards

Most HDPE geomembrane specifications reference ASTM D6693 (tensile properties) and ASTM D1004 (tear resistance). Thickness is measured per ASTM D5199.

What Results Should Look Like

For 1.5mm smooth HDPE geomembrane, typical yield strength exceeds 20 N/mm, break strength exceeds 30 N/mm, and elongation exceeds 700%. These values confirm the material meets GRI-GM13 or equivalent specifications.

Sampling Frequency

Request test certificates (mill test reports) for each batch. For critical projects, third-party lab verification on random samples provides additional assurance.

Yunnan YN Building Materials provides test certificates with every geomembrane order.
