A recent HDPE geomembrane deployment involved lining a retention pond with 1.5mm smooth HDPE liner. This field note shares what the installation team observed on site.
Site Conditions Observed
The work area was an excavated pond basin with compacted clay subgrade. The geomembrane rolls were delivered in 7-meter-wide sheets, requiring longitudinal seams every 7 meters across the pond floor.
Installation Sequence
- Subgrade was inspected for stones, roots, and sharp protrusions before unrolling
- Sheets were laid with minimal tension, allowing for thermal expansion
- Seams were made using a hot wedge welder, with hand extrusion welds at overlaps and details
- All seams underwent air channel testing before backfill
What Worked Well
Pre-testing weld parameters on scrap material saved significant rework time. The overlap width of 100mm provided adequate room for the wedge welder and hand-finish pass.
