Geotextile: Types, Functions and Applications Overview

Geotextiles are permeable fabrics used in civil engineering for filtration, separation, drainage and protection. This overview introduces the common types, functions and applications of geotextile fabric products.

Main Types of Geotextile

Non-woven geotextiles are made from polypropylene or polyester fibers bonded together, offering good filtration and high elongation. Woven geotextiles have a regular weave structure and higher tensile strength, suitable for reinforcement applications. The choice depends on the function required by the project.

Key Functions

Geotextiles separate soil layers, filter water while retaining soil particles, drain water along the fabric plane, and protect geomembranes from punctures. In road construction, they separate the subgrade from the aggregate and extend the pavement life.

Common Applications

Geotextiles are widely used in road and railway construction, drainage systems, retaining walls, landfills, ponds and slope protection. As a cushion layer under geomembrane liners, non-woven geotextiles reduce the risk of puncture and improve the liner performance.

Selection Considerations

Select the geotextile weight, strength and permeability according to the soil condition and the design load. For filtration applications the opening size should retain the local soil particles; for separation the fabric must resist installation stresses.

Installation Notes

Lay the geotextile with adequate overlap, normally 300-500 mm, and secure the edges to prevent shifting. Avoid dragging the fabric over sharp objects. For protection layers under geomembranes, place the geotextile directly on the prepared subgrade.
