
If your attic has adequate insulation and proper air sealing, and your home still feels drafty and cold in winter or too hot in summer, then you may need to add insulation to the external walls. Especially if you live in a very cold climate. If you replace the external wall panels of your home, consider adding insulation material at the same time.
In existing homes, consider using blown-in insulation material, which when installed using dense packing technology will provide a higher R-value. It can be added to external walls without causing too much disturbance to the finished areas of your home. Foam sheathing: provides a continuous insulation layer, reduces thermal bridges through wood studs, saves energy and improves comfort. Heavier sheathing products are easier to cut and install. Prevents condensation on internal walls by keeping the interior of the wall closer to internal conditions. Usually costs less than plywood or oriented strand board. If you replace plywood with foam sheathing, your walls will need bracing or other structural reinforcement.
