The Role of Cable Trays in Cable Wiring

In the electrical wiring of buildings, cable tray systems are used to support insulated cables for power distribution, control and communication. Cable trays serve as an alternative to open wiring or electrical conduit systems, commonly used for cable management in commercial and industrial buildings. They are especially useful in situations where changes to the wiring system are expected, because new cables can be installed by laying them in the cable tray rather than pulling them through conduits.

Cable tray is a unit or assembly, unit or section and related fittings that constitute a rigid structural system, used to securely fasten or support cables and cable conduits.

What is the use of cable trays?

According to electrical codes, a cable tray system is "a unit or assembly of units or sections and associated fittings forming a rigid structural system used to securely fasten or support cables and raceways." Cable trays support cables in the same way that road bridges support traffic.

What type of cable tray do companies use?

Several types of trays are used in different applications. Solid bottom cable troughs provide the greatest protection for cables, but require cutting the trough or using fittings to enter or exit cables. The deep and sturdy enclosure for cables is called a cable trough or cable channel.

Ventilated trays have openings in the bottom of the tray, allowing air circulation around cables, drainage, and allowing some dust to fall through the tray. Small cables can leave the cable trough through ventilation holes, which can be troughs or holes perforated in the bottom. Cables in ladder-type trays are supported by crossbars, similar to the rungs of a ladder.

Ladder and ventilated trays may have solid covers to protect cables from falling objects, dust and water. Tray covers used in outdoor or dusty locations may have a peaked shape to shed debris such as dust, ice or snow. Lighter cable trays are more suitable for situations where a large number of small cables are used, such as telephone or computer network cables. These cable troughs can be made of wire mesh called "cable baskets", or designed in the form of a single central ridge (rail) with ribs to support cables on either side.

What materials are cable trays made of?

Common cable trays are made of galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum or fiberglass reinforced plastic. The material for a given application is selected based on its location of use. Galvanized trays can be made from pre-galvanized steel sheets prefabricated into trays, or can be hot-dip galvanized after manufacturing. When galvanized trays are cut to length on site, the cut surfaces are usually coated with zinc-rich compounds to protect the metal from corrosion.

Manufacturers of cable troughs:

1. Perforated cable trays

Perforated cable troughs are of single-piece construction, available ventilated or solid bottom. They are mainly used for power cables, control cables. According to customer specifications and site conditions, they are available in light, medium and heavy duty. 2. Ladder-type cable troughs

Ladder-type cable trays consist of two longitudinal side channels connected by individual transverse channels, providing sturdy rail protection and system strength through smooth radius fittings and a wide selection of materials/finishes.

3. Basket-type cable trays

Basket-type cable trays are described as a universal solution for routing and supporting numerous cable installations. The wire frame enhances air circulation and cable ventilation. This may be applicable under desks, raised floors or suspended tray systems. You can assemble basket trays for intersections, horizontal sections, mounting brackets, hardware and tray cutters.

4. Cable conduits - wire trough cable trays

Cable troughs and cable tray wire troughs are widely used for laying underground cables and wires. We offer single-row or multi-row cable conduits for installing one or more cable connections simultaneously. Our products are widely used in telecommunications, electronics, electrical companies and other fields.
