
The raw material of rock wool refers to an insulation material made of rock and minerals. Rock wool blankets can be made into various products due to this material's excellent heat resistance and sound insulation capabilities. Rock wool insulation materials are usually used in building construction, industrial plants and walls.
The term "rock wool" is sometimes used interchangeably with "mineral wool", although the latter is actually a larger category of insulation materials, including rock wool, slag wool and glass fiber. Rock wool raw materials are naturally produced during volcanic eruptions. In the early 1900s, volcanologists discovered an unusual, wool-like rock fiber on trees near Mount Kilauea, and soon after the special qualities of this fiber were discovered.
Today, this process is replicated in commercial furnaces, where minerals and other raw materials are heated to about 1,600°C and subjected to steam or air streams. Oil is also added during the production process to reduce the formation of dust. More advanced technology requires spinning lava at high speed in a spinning wheel, similar to the way cotton candy is made. The finished rock wool is a mass of finely interwoven fibers, bound together with starch, used as loose fill or assembled into blankets (batts and rolls).
The rock wool structure as an insulation body is a single fiber of rock wool insulation material, which itself is a good heat conductor, but the sheets and rolls of this insulation material can effectively prevent heat transfer. Given their extremely high melting point of 1000°C to 1400°C, they are usually used to prevent the spread of fire in buildings. The R-value of rock wool boards is 3.10 to 4.0, which can play an important role in reducing energy consumption in homes and businesses. Sometimes problems occur because rock wool can retain a large amount of water, although gravity will allow it to drain as long as it has a path to drain. And the bulk form of rock wool fibers can be used for insulation of equipment, tanks, pipes, ovens and furnaces. It is used to make sound-absorbing ceilings. Used for residential, commercial and industrial insulation. Rock wool is very effectively used as insulation material behind and around electrical boxes, wires and pipes. It can fill most wall cavities with almost no gaps. Of course, it is also used as spray fireproof material.
Some people also have concerns about the safety of rock wool. Although many man-made mineral fibers are considered harmful to humans, the danger is mainly limited to biopersistent materials, such as special-purpose glass wool and refractory ceramic fibers. The more common type of rock wool used as insulation material "cannot be classified as a human carcinogen". Rock wool can cause skin irritation, although this is temporary mechanical irritation rather than more serious chemical irritation. In any case, it is always a good practice for homeowners, inspectors or contractors to wear quality gloves and other personal protective equipment when handling rock wool or any other insulation material.
