Flame-retardant extruded board

Let's first look at the flame retardancy of extruded boards. The flame retardancy of extruded boards can be said to be a main function of extruded boards, but this function is relatively an additional function, because it itself belongs to a flammable product, and it becomes flame-retardant only after adding flame retardants. If the flame retardant performance of extruded boards is distinguished by grade, it has B2 grade, B1 grade, A1 grade. Usually for use in construction sites, reaching B1 grade is already able to meet its use needs. In short, its flame retardancy is related to whether it itself adds flame retardants.
So what is the self-extinguishing of extruded boards? Let's give the answer first. Self-extinguishing means the extinguishing time, which refers to whether it can be extinguished immediately under the premise of leaving the fire source, or it needs to experience a few seconds of burning before it can be extinguished. The flame retardant we mentioned above is the auxiliary material added to make the extruded board produce self-extinguishing effect. The more added, the shorter the extinguishing time, the less added, the longer the extinguishing time.
In this article, we will define the term self-extinguishing, specifically explain and discuss the characteristics seen from self-extinguishing materials, and view the relevant basis supporting this.
So what exactly does self-extinguishing mean?
The Dictionary of Science and Technology Terms defines self-extinguishing as "the ability of a material to stop burning once the flame source is removed".
By definition, for a self-extinguishing material, once the flame source is removed, you will see the flame stop immediately. In contrast, for materials that do not self-extinguish, such as polyethylene, you would expect to see the material continue to burn after the flame source is removed.
To prove this, we use polyethylene samples for testing. There are many polyethylene materials, for example, geomembrane is produced from polyethylene material, and it does not have the self-extinguishing function.
The self-extinguishing test of polyethylene samples is that once the sample is exposed to the heat of a radiant hot plate, it will melt at first, and then in about one minute and two seconds, it will be ignited. When the radiation shield used to protect the sample from the radiant hot plate returns above the polyethylene test sample after three minutes to mark the end of the test, you can see that the flame persists. This behavior is a typical characteristic of materials that do not self-extinguish. After the test is completed, the polyethylene sample has completely thermally decomposed. What remains is the inorganic matter left after burning. Such a test can prove that polyethylene does not have self-extinguishing properties.
But whether polyethylene or polystyrene, they do not have flame retardant effect in the initial state. But here there is another problem: can polystyrene without flame retardant effect be produced into extruded boards? The answer is yes, because extruded boards are obtained by heating polyethylene and then extruding and expanding. Whether or not to add flame retardants has no impact on the extruded board itself. It is only given the need to meet flame retardant standards in engineering applications.
