Usage Method of Attic Rock Wool Board Insulation

Geomembrane

Attic insulation is a more energy-efficient way, and while heat rises, the result is that no less than 25% of energy escapes through the roof. In this article, you can learn how attic insulation works.

Insulating the roof or attic floor?

When you want to insulate the upper part of your house, you can insulate the roof and floor of the attic. If the attic is only used as a storage room, it is recommended that you insulate the floor. Do you want to use this space as a living area? Needless to say, in this case, you should insulate the roof. Obviously, it is also completely possible to insulate both the roof and the attic floor. Attic insulation overview:

Insulating the attic floor

Insulating the attic floor is a suitable choice for reducing heating costs. The warmth of the living room will no longer rise to the attic, so you don't have to heat the house anymore. In terms of cost, floor insulation also has more advantages.

The application method of attic floor insulation largely depends on the structure of the floor. A support structure made of solid concrete requires another working method than a support structure composed of wooden rafters.

Insulating attic with wooden support structure

Isn't the floor made of solid concrete? In this case, insulation material can be placed by filling the space between the floor beams with insulation material. Semi-rigid or soft insulation boards made of mineral wool are very suitable for this purpose. Use insulation packages with a thickness of 15 to 20 cm: in terms of cost versus savings, these packages have the best ratio. As with roof insulation, you must always use a moisture barrier. This must be connected to the bottom of the support structure, facing the warm side. You can also buy attic insulation boards that are already equipped with a moisture barrier. In addition to rock wool, the space on the floor can also be filled with mineral wool or polyurethane foam. And how the floor should be further completed depends on whether the floor needs to be walked on. Since many attics are not designed for walking, better wooden boards are usually chosen.

Insulating attic with rock wool board If the floor is solid, obviously attic insulation material must be applied on top of it. First, the installer will apply moisture-proof foil to the existing floor. This may be loose, but the joints should always be kept good. The same goes for the foil edges near the walls. After that, pressure-resistant insulation boards can be installed on top of the foil. These should be placed in two alternating layers (total thickness 20cm). If you don't want to use rigid insulation boards, you can also use mineral wool for insulation. However, for the insulation material to be installed between the wooden strips, a wooden frame needs to be made. Needless to say, when you choose this option, cost from insulating the roof internally, another possibility is to isolate the attic through the roof; by insulating the roof, you will experience a pleasant living climate. In addition, the construction method for insulating pitched roofs is to use mineral wool. In the case of insulating the roof with glass wool or rock wool, completely fill the space between the rafters with insulation material. The material needs to be thick enough, so it is recommended to maintain a layer of 15 to 20cm. Otherwise, the attic insulation will not be effective enough. Note: considering that existing rafters may not be wide enough to accommodate the material. You can solve this problem by installing new rafters on the old rafters. It is important to cut off a portion of mineral wool that is larger than the distance between the rafters. Half an inch is excellent. Rock wool board and glass wool are easy to compress, so they will stay in place when applied between rafters. After that, a vapor barrier made of plastic foil should be applied on top of the attic insulation material.
