
Under cold conditions, the main purpose of insulation is to reduce heat flowing out of the building. As components of the building envelope, windows, doors, roofs, floors/foundations, walls and air infiltration barriers are all important sources of heat loss; in a well-insulated house, windows will become an important heat transfer source.
The conductive heat loss resistance of standard single-pane glass corresponds to an R-value of approximately 0.17 m²⋅K⋅W⁻¹, or more than twice that of typical double-pane glass (compared to 2-4 m²⋅K⋅W⁻¹ for glass wool batts). Losses can be reduced through good weather resistance, overall insulation, and minimizing the amount of non-insulated (especially non-solar) glass. Indoor thermal radiation may also be a disadvantage of spectrally selective (low-emissivity, low-e) glass. The R-value of some insulating glass systems can be doubled to tripled.
Technologies in cold climates.
Nowadays, more and more insulation materials and insulation technologies have appeared on the market, providing us with a variety of building insulation options. Especially in cold climate regions, a large amount of insulation materials are needed to cope with heat loss (infiltration, ventilation and radiation) caused by cold weather. And there is a technology worth discussing, that is, extruded board external wall insulation. This technology has been popularized and adopted since the 1990s. It mainly carries out the pasting of extruded boards on the building external wall. And the usage amount of Kunming extruded boards is also relatively large, which is also the development trend of the building insulation industry. Future building construction will also more use extruded boards as thermal insulation materials.
